Home-Start Kirkcaldy

Home-Start is the UK's leading family support charity. Home-Start Kirkcaldy offers support, friendship and practical help to parents with young children in Kirkcaldy, Kinghorn, Burntisland and Cardenden. We offer a unique service for families - recruiting and training volunteers to support parents with young children at home.

All out Home-Start volunteers must be a parent or have parenting experience.

Before being matched to a family, all our volunteers must attend a preparation course. This course runs one day a week for five weeks between 10am and 2.30pm and lunch is provided. Topics included on the preparation course include -

  • The role of the Home-Start volunteer
  • How families are referred to Home-Start
  • "Good Enough" parenting
  • Values and attitudes
  • The role of the Health Visitor
  • Child Protection
  • Play
  • Confidentiality Commitment, boundaries and support

The preparation course is very informal and gives volunteers the opportunity to find out more about the project and what their role will be. The Co-ordinators run the preparation course although we do invite outside speakers to a couple of sessions.

The Family Group

The Family Group is available 2 days a week, Monday and Wednesday from 1pm until 3pm. There is a room available for parents, if they choose to stay, to sit and chat with other parents, have a cup of tea or coffee and access information to other services.

The children are looked after by a Creche Worker and Volunteers. The children have a safe, friendly environment to play in where they can learn through play experience and have fun. A small healthy snack and drink is provided for the children.

Allocation of places

Places are available for children from 1 year to pre-school nursery. Places are limited and allocated by the Co-ordinators with reviews being carried out as required. There is no charge.
