I do not know enough about the politics or religion to speak intelligently. If I read 5 more books set in this time and place, I might be able to string a sentence together. My thoughts on the book focus on storytelling and characterization. Both were superb. A book aimed at KS2 with a heavy focus on change, survival, evolution and natural selection. I feel this book is really good at showing children why animals adapt and how they change over time. You can see this moth flying during the day from June to August in flowery grassland, woodland and grassy coastal habitats. It lives all over the UK, even in the Outer Hebrides.' To identify your catch this book is the first ever to depict every species as you find it in the wild, in completely natural positions, instead of wings spread as in a collection. Absolutely outstanding. More than 1,600 superbly detailed illustrations of over 880 species, showing moths in their natural resting positions.

This day-flying hawkmoth was mainly a migrant to the UK, but a very common one. Warmer weather had made its visits more frequent and now this species has a permanent presence. This one really explores not only the cultural divide that was perpetrated by the British that led to serious violence. Equally it explores gender roles within the different cultures and how even educated women struggled in a male dominated society. It also touches upon the caste system and its impact on different people's fortunes. I felt like I learned a lot but was also touched by the different generations of this family and the impact of their decisions as they rippled through the most turbulent time of their lives. The species likes heathland, moorland, bogs, hedgerows and open scrubby places. Occasionally it can be spotted in gardens. Finally, I do not understand the inclusion of the first scene of the book juxtaposed with the last scene of the book. The scenes seem unrelated, yet they are placed in a strategic and poignant way but do not offer any strategic or poignant meanings. The narrative is disorganized and while I enjoy Razak’s writing style I was very frustrated at the end scene. I felt that I already knew what happened to Alma and I could have known what happened earlier and gained nothing from reading the last 40% of the book. Inspiring children to write their own books is the absolute BEST feeling so I was over the moon when CLPE shared these amazing books created by pupils at #hawkhurstprimaryMoth is dedicated to my mother, Merlin. She was an incredible woman who raised me and my sisters alone. Mum died at young age when we were in our mid-20s, but I know she would have loved Moth and the way it has been embraced by children, teachers and parents on both sides of the Atlantic. The sounds of muezzin that float across the city are soothing, the air is soft with the scent of jasmine and rose, and conversations are strewn with quotes from Tagore. At least, that’s how the first half of Moth reads. However, this is as much a story of the riving of naivety as it is about the loss of innocence, and partition’s agonies go abruptly from being a political tragedy, discussed over supper, to a source of intense personal anguish. Meanwhile, a “shattered” Delhi fills with displaced souls. Ma/Tanisi was orphaned when young, and bought up by her Uncle on a houseboat in Kashmir where she learnt the Urdu she now teaches (both at University and to the sons of a well known local Muslim – both positions becoming increasingly untenable) and of which she, with her blue eyes, still dreams as well as remembering her infatuation with her Uncle which she seems to find echoed more in the father of her charges than in her husband. Tanisi and her Uncle are (I think) of the Pir Ali caste (which I think from some research is associated with the poet Tagore and seen as heretical by pure Brahmins).Cogan Primary ran their own Biodiversity Picture Book Award #GwobrLlyfrLluniauBioamrwyiaethCogan2020 for picture books which show concern for and celebrate our environment. I was so happy that Moth got nominated by the pupils! Books for identifying caterpillars are very scarce. This excellent caterpillar guide is now available again. Foodplants, Habits etc. detailed for each species. I won’t say this is by far the best partition literature that I have read, however I did enjoy this unique insight which encapsulated historical events and experiences flawlessly. There were a few instances where Hindi phrases were misprinted which I am willing to overlook as it was written by someone who is uninitiated to the language and they were far and few!
