About this deal

This is proof, not that it’s needed, that Jenny McLachlan is a writer of enormous heart and versatility. I’m a really big fan’ Phil Earle, award-winning author of Being Billy and co-author of Get Me Out of Here! with Andy McNab

The remaining characters introduced throughout the book, come from the imaginations of the main characters, and as such, Jenny McLachlan has been able to push the boat out when it comes to their traits and personalities. I won’t say much about them, only that I love Win; his ability to zone out and remain care-free, despite everything going on around at times, reminds me of some of the children in my class. His determination, and the enthusiasm and self-confidence he continually shows despite often failing miserably, is heart-warming. Arthur’s Grandad decides the only way to find out is to venture into the folding bed and see if he comes out the other side, if he does the game obviously wasn’t real, if he doesn’t then he will have found the land of Roar. Arthur watches as his Grandad disappears into the chair and waits, but when he doesn’t come out there is only one thing for it, he has to follow him, but the land of Road has changed and the evil Magpie Crowky has captured his Grandad, there is only one thing for it, Arthur is going to have to travel the land and rescue him, he just wishes Rose was with him but she still doesn’t believe. In the third mysterious tale of Eerie-on-Sea, it's almost Ghastly Night, and the Shadowghast—an ancient spirit in a lantern—lurks in wait for the power to enslave the town. Twins Arthur and Rose have found as they have gotten older that they are growing apart, Arthur is still quite young and wants to play games and be a child, Rose wants to act like a teenager and has no interest in anything except her phone, which she is on constantly.

Whenever they stayed at their grandfather’s house, twins Rose and Arthur would play a game they invented called Roar, which began by them crawling into a folding bed and a new world. Now aged eleven the twins are once again staying with their grandfather and helping him clean out the loft when they come across the bed. However, while clearing out the attic at their grandad's house they stubble upon the old camp bed that was the entrance to the land or roar, Arthur and Rose find out their imaginary world may not have just been in their minds... Was nebenbei erwähnt, echt gruselig ist. The new middle-grade fantasy that will make you believe in magic! When Arthur and Rose were little, they were heroes in the Land of Roar, an imaginary world that they found by climbing through the folding bed in their grandad’s attic. Roar was filled with things they loved – dragons, mermaids, ninja wizards and adventure – as well as things that scared them (including a very creepy scarecrow. . .) Now the twins are eleven, Roar is just a memory. But when they help Grandad clean out the attic, Arthur is horrified as Grandad is pulled into the folding bed and vanishes. Is he playing a joke? Or is Roar . . . real? 'The Land of Roar' is reminiscent of 'Peter Pan', 'The Neverending Story' and 'Jumanji' – perfect for readers of 'Nevermoor' and 'Wizards of Once'.

Ich meine, ein Minja, eine Mischung aus Ninja und Magier, da muss man erstmal drauf kommenThe Land of Roar by Jenny McLachlan brings a fantasy world to life where children meet dragons, unicorns, mermaids and more in this beautifully illustrated children’s book for KS2. Now the twins are eleven, Roar is just a memory. But when they help Grandad clean out the attic, Arthur is horrified as Grandad is pulled into the folding bed and vanishes. Is he playing a joke? Or is Roar ... real? The brother and sister relationship between Rose and Arthur shows the natural ups and downs all siblings go through, and therefore feels realistic and relatable to children reading the book. This is great for children who may themselves be going through a bad patch with their siblings, as it shows that through all their differences exists an unbreakable bond. The familial bond is extended through to their grandad, who also features in the book. As little old man with asthma, keeping the magic of childhood alive and looking after the grandchildren, he reminds me of my own grandad. From the books I’ve read, it seems fairly uncommon to have siblings and a grandparent both feature, as they’re often built around a single child facing ‘the hero’s journey’ alone, and so it was refreshing to read. Nicht mal Arthur glaubt daran, dass Arro tatsächlich mal existiert haben könnte… bis sein Opa plötzlich in der vergammelten Gästebett-Matratze verschwindet! year old twins Rose and Arthur have grown up spending holidays with their fun loving granddad, but as they have grown older they have started to grow apart. Arthur still wants to play imaginative games whilst Rose would rather be on her phone, now in the final summer holidays before starting secondary school their relationship and imaginations are about to be tested.

PERFECT FOR: Curriculum objectives, comprehension questions and extra activities including mermaids and ninja wizards, drama and role play, diary writing, creating sensory poems, designing and writing about magical lands, learning about world-building and the fantasy genre, and more When Arthur and Rose were little, they were heroes in the Land of Roar, an imaginary world that they found by climbing through the folding bed in their grandad’s attic. Roar was filled with things they loved – dragons, mermaids, ninja wizards and adventure – as well as things that scared them (including a very creepy scarecrow…) Way out in the furthest part of the known world, a tiny stronghold exists all on its own, cut off from the rest of human-kin by monsters that lurk beneath the Snow Sea. It is a great book to read. Full of fun and imagination. The Land of Roar is truly a special place! This turned out to be a fun story, an homage to imagination. It’s a portal fantasy featuring a world completely invented by imagination. It has a mermaid-witch (“Mitch”) and a wizard-ninja (“Win”). Ha. The villain is a scarecrow-crow, hard to visualize but thankfully some detailed illustrations bring him to life.

Now the twins are eleven, Roar is just a memory. But when they help Grandad clean out the attic, Arthur is horrified as Grandad is pulled into the folding bed and vanishes. Is he playing a joke? Or is Roar... real? Open the door to a spellbinding world where the wilderness is alive and a deep magic rises from the earth itself . . . A middle-grade fantasy that will make you believe in magic! Arthur and Rose enter the imaginary world, the 'Land of Roar', by climbing through the folding bed in their grandad’s attic. The Land of Roar Twins Arthur and Rose played “Roar” when they were little. But they’re getting older and growing apart as Rose is desperate to belong to the in-crowd. The book is as much about their relationship as it is about Roar. Yet it continues to captivate us. And rightfully so! Whether we were raised on a series of unfortunate events, or a progression of mysteries we had to solve with Frank, Al, Chet or Nancy, or even figuring our way thru a phantom tollbooth or bridges destined for failure, WE made it thru.

Now they are 11, Rose spends hours on her phone and worries about fitting in and Arthur, despite the scar on his wrist where he was bitten by a dragon, has almost forgotten about Roar. But then a mysterious figure appears at the attic window, an old map turns up, and Grandad vanishes... This funny, captivating story is filled with the painful pangs of growing up and the transporting qualities of imagination' Guardian So glad I decided to get this book. Fun, adventure, magic, dragons, a bad guy, humour and of course, the absolute best part, the magical alternate fantasy world! When Arthur and Rose were little, they were heroes in the Land of Roar, an imaginary world that they found by climbing through the folding bed in their grandad’s attic. Roar was filled with things they loved – dragons, mermaids, ninja wizards and adventure – as well as things that scared them (including a very creepy scarecrow. . .) The Land of Roar is reminiscent of Peter Pan, The Neverending Story and Jumanji – perfect for readers of Nevermoor and Wizards of Once. Now the twins are eleven, Roar is just a memory. But when they help Grandad clean out the attic, Arthur is horrified as Grandad is pulled into the folding bed and vanishes. Is he playing a joke? Or is Roar … real? The wins go on an epic adventure to take on their old foes and reunite with their old friends in a daring rescue attempt. As I’ve mentioned above, this book would be great for a younger class because of the fantasy elements and accessibility, and yet would still fit in brilliantly with an older class, meaning it’ll likely find itself being passed between many children. Thankfully, Egmont put a great deal of effort into printing The Land of Roar properly; the book feels solidly built and should hold up well in a classroom.
