About this deal

The new reverse design was the work of Frank Gasparro, who was then the Mint’s Assistant Engraver. And it had considerable longevity: the Lincoln Memorial reverse was included on every cent issued until 2009. The Australian pre-decimal halfpenny coin, commonly known as a ha’penny (pronounced / ˈ h eɪ p ə n i/), [1] was the smallest denomination of the Australian Pound in circulation. It was a unit of currency that equalled half of a penny, 1 / 24 of a shilling, or 1 / 480 of a pound. [2] The coin was made to be equivalent to the British halfpenny; its dimensions, composition and values were equivalent, and additionally, the two currencies were fixed at par. [3] George V became King of the United Kingdom in 1910 after the death of King Edward VII. Subsequently, coins minted for Australia by the Royal Mint, London, dated 1911, were altered on the obverse only. Bronze halfpennies (and pennies) were issued for the first time this year. [6]

That year marked the bicentenary of Lincoln’s birth, and again, a new design was commissioned for the occasion. This showed the “Union shield”, and it’s the design you’ll still see on modern Lincoln pennies. Why does the word Halfpennyworth only have One Syllable?: It doesn't. Historically it was pronounced with Two". Gareth Roberts, Linguistics Professor, PhD, U. of Edinburgh (2010) . Retrieved 15 May 2017.

The reverse during this time consisted of the words "ONE HALF PENNY" in three lines at the centre, surrounded by a beaded circle. A small scroll is located under the word "PENNY" within the beaded circle, and the legend "COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA" with the issued date surrounding the circle of beads. [7] Depending on the place of mintage, certain coins could also contain a small mintmark located under the scroll. Halfpenny" was colloquially written ha'penny, and " 1 + 1 / 2 d" was spoken as "a penny ha’penny" / ə ˈ p ɛ n i ˈ h eɪ p n i/ or three ha'pence / θ r iː ˈ h eɪ p ən s/. [5] "Halfpenny" is a rare example of a word in the English language that has a silent ' f'. The 1959 pennies were the first to bear the image of Washington DC’s Lincoln Memorial on the reverse. The old pre-decimal Penny, was two-hundred-and-fortieth of a pound, and was symbolised with a letter 'd'. This is derived from the Roman denarius coin. An old halfpenny, 1/2d, was therefore, 1/480th of a pound sterling. After 1971, the decimal halfpenny was two-hundredth of a pound, it is symbolised with 'p', as '1/2p'. The likeness may have been based on a photograph that had been taken of Lincoln at the studio of one Matthew Brady. Some coin historians believe it was Brady himself who took the photograph, others that it was more likely the work of one of his assistants.
