About this deal

My point is that I was able to reliably shoot some of the fastest-moving macroscopic objects on the planet, and it wasn't even particularly difficult. With a total weight of 2,300 grams, it is noticeably heavier than the 80-400mm at 1,570 grams, the Tamron 150-600mm f/5-6. He is a published motorsports photographer with a lot of experience, having covered a huge range of motorsport over the years. For many years, Nikon has been limiting affordable super-telephoto zoom lenses above 300mm to the 80-400mm VR lens, while keeping its high-end super telephoto line of zoom and prime lenses available only for those with deep pockets. Although our team at Photography Life has not had a chance to test this particular combination due to the unavailability of the D500 in the US, we have been actively using the lens on camera bodies like the Nikon D7200, D750, D810 and D4S for this particular review.

Photography Life's assessment of the lens' sharpness is consistent with my observations: the Nikon 200-500mm performs admirably throughout its zoom range. A prime, new or old will always produce better quality images and if you know what you are doing, will also produce a greater number of sharper in focus pictures, resulting in more keepers. On the flip side, both rings on my sample are smooth and consistent in their rotation action (some lenses get “stickier” as you near focal or focus range limits). This makes it an ideal option for wildlife photographers who want to capture stunning images without breaking the bank.Whether you shoot wildlife, birds, planes, or fast-paced sports, this powerful new FX-format zoom delivers unwavering performance. This prevents your camera from cycling through its entire focusing range, saving precious milliseconds to increase your chances of getting the perfect shot. This proves especially useful in situations where movement is limited, such as when working from a hide or with subjects that are sensitive to movement. Meanwhile, please enjoy the review of the Nikon 200-500mm VR lens, along with comparisons to Tamron 150-600mm VC, Sigma 150-600mm C / Sport and Nikon 80-400mm VR lenses.

Reproduction in whole or part in any form or medium without specific written permission is prohibited. Aperture decreases, which is a drawback, but the main issue is the autofocus becomes inconsistent and more challenging to use on DSLRs. While it's suitable for capturing subjects that aren't moving quickly, it may struggle with acquiring focus on fast-moving subjects, leading to missed moments you may have gotten with other lenses. Its resilience in these situations showcases the durability and reliability that wildlife photographers need when shooting outdoors. If you are getting paid to be track side, you can move to where you want within reason and fill your frame with Valentino Rossi laying some darkies on the track. I shoot the 200-500mm as I shoot a rifle; you need to know how to hold it steady and pull the trigger slowly and smoothly for the best results. So a focal length of 600mm on a crop is 900mm, you don’t need a shutter speed of 900 to get a sharp picture, 600th of a second will do it as the real physical focal length hasn’t changed. Normal Mode is full on VR which will try and make the image in the viewfinder and therefore at the sensor as stable as possible.

In this article, we will review the Nikon 200-500mm lens from the perspective of a wildlife photographer. filters are big, and as with most telephotos, you easily can use a couple of them, even on full-frame, with no fear of vignetting. The lens is obviously not the fastest focuser, but claiming that it is good only for static subjects is not accurate either. First, we are still dealing with the same single threaded tripod foot that requires attaching a tripod plate. To maximize the Nikon 200-500’s autofocus capabilities, I recommend limiting your minimum focusing distance and only switching back to the full range when your subject is close enough.

What I like about the placement of the focus ring, is that it is located at the back of the lens, which is an advantage when hand-holding the lens, since you never actually touch the focus ring in the process. It means we can shoot it in dim light and never need a tripod unless we're shooting time exposures or star trails. On FX-format cameras, 500mm brings distant birds, wildlife, athletes, performers, landmarks and more into tight focus. Comparing the Nikon 200-500 to other Nikon lenses I've used, I can confidently say this lens boasts the best image vibration reduction. On my F6 (2004) and F5 (1996), AF, VR, 3D Matrix Metering and auto exposure modes all work perfectly, except that the only auto or manual aperture setting available is f/5.
