About this deal

After a little prodding, BenQ managed to send over a pair
of 3D glasses so I could check the TK800’s stereoscopic capabilities. There is no lens shift, so take care to install the projector as precisely as possible relative to the screen. For more performance driven projectors we will even take that up to 50 hours before starting any serious assessment.

It is supposed to create an image ‘good enough’ to enjoy big screen sporting events, or gaming with your friends and is not a critical home cinema viewing device for movie viewing in a bat cave dedicated theatre. If you do not want to compromise on projection quality and reliability, choose an original manufacturer lamp. We enjoyed this feature, as it enabled us to place the projector a bit closer to the screen in our cramped basement — we got a 100-inch, 16:9 picture at a little over 12 feet from the screen. With a solid warranty and up to 15,000 hours of lamp life, the TK800 should last you through years of steady use. Comparing the TK800 with the second HT2550 test sample, each does better than the other on some performance issues, and they tie on others.

It has a much better than average onboard speaker with dynamic range that is surprising for its size--again a nice feature for occasional backyard use. If we had tested the BenQ as solely a home cinema model for critical movie viewing it wouldn’t score well at all, given that niche set of image quality points it would need to hit, but this isn’t one of those projectors and doesn’t pretend to be. So we’d recommend investing in a good soundbar like the Samsung HW-N950, which can deliver an immersive audio experience worthy of the big screen. On the top plate above the lens is a recess with the manual zoom and focus rings, there is no lens shift.

Both projectors use a color wheel with a clear (white) segment to boost brightness compared with each brand's similar dark-room projector. However given that the TK800 is best suited to rooms with a lot of ambient light, these particular issues will be less noticeable. Due to the fixed offset that positions the image entirely above the centerline of the lens (or below it if ceiling mounted), the ideal installation in many cases will be a ceiling mount. The BenQ TK800 is well-made, has all the connections you’ll need, and sports a solid set of features. As you can see in the greyscale tracking (top left) we have too much red and green and a deficit of blue energy. However BenQ have been using the terminology ‘True 4K” in their marketing which we feel is not accurate and a little misleading to those who don’t understand how the technology works. Genuine original bulbs are manufactured to the identical strict quality control requirements as are found in original modules. The TK800 is aimed at multi-use media rooms where people might enjoy sports and console gaming in addition to their weekly movie night. colour standard and nowhere near the current DCI-P3 gamut being used by Hollywood on UHD Blu-rays and the like within the Rec.
